December 20

ELE hosted their end of term reception today.  It was preceeded by a poetry reading where students from the different nationalities represented at ELE recited poems by national writers in both the language of origin as well as in Spanish.   The countries represented were:  China, the USA, Dominican Republic, Sweeden, Japan, Tunisia, Finland, Berin, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, and Brazil.  Several of our students were among the presenters.   The reading was followed by some snacks and refreshments.   It was a nice way to end the term.

Community Service in Oviedo Schools

Ten Fall students conducted service work in two local schools this term.  Two of these students served in both schools.  This represents nearly 50% of the students enrolled this term!

Featured here (courtesy of Aimee Fritsch)   are some of the school children during the Amagüestu fall festival. Aimee received an entire portfolio of drawings from her students on her last day of work.  She doesn’t dare take a look at them now because she knows that the tears will flow!

Professor and Writer and Attorney,  Eduardo Gonzalez Viaña’s  offers a Conference at the Uni Ovi:

Eduardo, professor of  Western Oregon University and former visiting faculty for the Oviedo program (twice!) was invited to give a conference titled “Derecho y Literatura”.  Eduardo,  an emminent writer and journalist, is also a lawyer by training.  He has  taught twice on our program.   The entire AHA staff and one of his students attended the conference and were all ears!

If you are curious about Eduardo, just Google his name. You can also check out the article La Nueva España published about one of the classes he taught in Oviedo while he was here.

He is looking into uploading it on the park’s website!  We will add a link to the guide on our website once it is up and running.

December 11   End of Term Dinner at Kin’s Cafeteria.  The meal was not fancy but it was a wonderful opportunity for the group to get together one last time before the frenzy of the last week.    Goosebums and Tears:  Last dinner slideshow movie,  courtesy of Mark Mason,  was a warm and funny recap of student experiences this term.  Featured below: the motley crew (Arieanna, Kei, Dana & Dylan),  Rebecca and her Bridget Jones sweater, and Laura – the birthday girl…21 this day!

December 6-9 –  “Puente de Diciembre”

Students usually take advantage of the two national holidays (December 6 – Dia de la Constitución  & December 8 – Dia de la Immaculada Concepción) celebrated during the first week in December to enjoy personal travel.  This term everyone managed  escapades to domestic destinations or to Europe, A couple of  daring students drove all the way to Sevilla to join a tour  to Morocco.  ESN, Erasmus Student Network,  offered a very reasonably priced excursion to Granada.  Some of the foreign destinations chosen were:  Morocco, Italy, England, Portugal, Germany).
