MAY – JUNE

Intensive Spanish – Maymester

  • Contact hours: 100 (75 grammar and composition plus 25 Spanish Culture and Civilization)
  • Language level: Intermediate (A2-B1) and Advanced levels (B2-C1).
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday (9:30am to 2:00pm) at La Casa de las Lenguas in the University of Oviedo’s Humanities Campus.
  • Field trips: GEO-sponsored Oviedo tour, field trip to Gijón and other Oviedo attractions. Two Saturday excursions and a welcome dinner party sponsored by the University of Oviedo.

Intensive Spanish for Healthcare Professionals.

  • Contact hours: 100 (80 class hours of Spanish language plus 20 practicum hours in healthcare facilities).
  • Extras: Class size is limited to 15 students to maximize student learning.  In-class learning is complemented by a 20 hour practicum in local health care facilities, including  the prestigious Hospital Universitario Central de Oviedo. 
  • Language level: Intermediate (B1) and Advanced levels (B2-C1).
  • Field trips: GEO-sponsored Oviedo tour, field trip to Gijón and other Oviedo attractions. Two Saturday excursions and a welcome dinner party sponsored by the University of Oviedo.

JULY

Spanish Language – Summer I

  • Contact hours: 80 (60 grammar and composition plus 20 Spanish culture and civilization)
  • Language level: Beginner (A1), Intermediate (A2-B1) and Advanced levels (B2-C1).
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday (9:30am to 2:00pm) at La Casa de las Lenguas in the University of Oviedo’s Humanities Campus.
  • Field trips: GEO-sponsored Oviedo tour, field trip to Gijón and other Oviedo attractions. Two Saturday excursions and a welcome dinner party sponsored by the University of Oviedo.

Spanish for Heritage Speakers

  • Contact hours: 80 (60 grammar and composition plus 20 Spanish culture and civilization).
  • Language level: Heritage speakers, who learned Spanish from and use it with their family while living in the U.S.
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday (9:30am to 2:00pm) at La Casa de las Lenguas in the University of Oviedo’s Humanities Campus.
  • Field trips: GEO-sponsored Oviedo tour, field trip to Gijón and other Oviedo attractions. Two Saturday excursions and a welcome dinner party sponsored by the University of Oviedo.

AUGUST

Spanish Language – Summer II

  • Contact hours: 80 (60 grammar and composition plus 20 Spanish culture and civilization)
  • Language level: Beginner (A1), Intermediate (A2-B1) and Advanced levels (B2-C1).
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday (9:30am to 2:00pm) at La Casa de las Lenguas in the University of Oviedo’s Humanities Campus.

Advanced Spanish Language, Literature, and Culture.

  • Courses taught in Spanish by Professor David Wacks for a total of 8 quarter or 5 semester credits. SPAN 341: Hispanic Culture through Literature (900-1600) and SPAN 399: Asturian Culture, will study Asturian History, Art History, Food, Folklore, and Mythology.
  • Requirements: Students must have completed two of SPAN 301, 303, 305, 308 or their equivalents at partner institutions. Students who have completed two years of language courses can participate in the Spanish Language in Oviedo summer session I prior to this program to satisfy this requirement.
  • The application process for this program is competitive: GEO staff and the program’s faculty leader will review your application after the final application deadline. Acceptance decisions will be communicated to applicants at that time.
  • Extras: Your learning experience will also be supplemented with several excursions in and around Oviedo. Classes are held in the mornings, allowing you the opportunity to enjoy the many leisure activities offered in the area during the summer.
