INTERNSHIP AND SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

We believe this is yet another area that facilitates and promotes  students’ integration in the local culture.   Past student have served or interned in  a number of local organizations.

Service learning, volunteering and working as an intern  requires adequate Spanish language skills, seriousness of purpose and a great deal of dedication.  If you are seriously interested in engaging in these activities while you are in Oviedo, please contact us as soon as possible to see what can be arranged.

IMPORTANT:   Students who want to work with minors will need to bring an FBI Criminal Background Check.   This is not expensive but takes time.  Our recommendation is that you bring one with you to make sure that all the local interhship and service opportunties are available to you.  This type of background check is also required in the US to work with minors and other vulnerable populations.

Internship and Service Learning Opportunities for Students Enrolled in the Fall/Spring  Programs

  • Teaching assistant to English instructors available in both public and private schools in Oviedo
  • Assisting with activities (arts & crafts, cooking) in English  in the afterschool program at the elementary school level in public schools.
  • Cultural animation focused on hospitalized children.
  • Working with mentally or physically  handicapped persons,  elderly populations, immigrant groups, and disavantaged social groups in several Oviedo NGOs.

There are a number of positions available in each of these placements.

Internship at the Oviedo Center

In the past, we have  offer an internship at the Oviedo Center through IE3 Global Internships.  Although this position is not advertised at present,  it can be activated for the right candidate.    This internship is stand alone and interns do not participate in the regular program.  There are three types of focus possible:

  • Students interested in International education who wish to learn all about the on site administration of a study abroad program.   So far we have had 4 students Intern at the GEO Center through IE3.
  • Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Design,… student to help develop materials  to showcase the program and the site.
  • Intercultural Communication students who would like experience in intercultural training, intercultural competency assessment and research through working with the Oviedo SD and staff assisting in the Intercultural Communication /Intercultural Perspectives class and program ongoing data gathering and research project.

Internships can be combined with course work at ELE or Direct enrolment at the University of Oviedo.
