The summer intensive  Spanish courses are 80 contact hours each.  Instruction is available at the Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels.   Elementary level students  focus primarily on language  development.  At the intermediate and advanced levels the course consists of 60 contact hours of Spanish language (grammar and composition) plus a total of  20 contact hours of  Spanish Culture and Civilization exporing topics such as:

  • Conversation on Spanish Society and Culture (up to 20 contact hours)
  • Spanish/Hispanic American Literature (up to 10 contact hours)

  • Business Spanish (up to 20 contact hours)

These topics are taught during the last hour of class and last for two weeks (10 contact hours)  each.  Students can concentrate on just one of these topics during the entire month (i.e. Business Spanish)  or chose two different ones  (e.g.  Spanish/ Hispanic American Literature and Conversation).

Spanish for Heritage Speakers Course

During the month of July the University offers a course specially designed for Heritage students who are at the advanced level.  Heritage speakers, who learnt and use their Spanish in the context of  their family while living in the U.S.  usually have strong oral skills in informal registers of the Spanish language.  The course’s objective is to work on developing their Spanish in other areas where they are usually lacking such as grammar and writing and oral expression using more formal registers of the language.   Besides working on language development, the course also includes attention to Spanish culture and civilization (literature and history/art history).  The course consists of a total of 80 contact hours,  distributed in the following manner:  40 Spanish language and 40 Spanish Culture.
