Located in the middle of Spain’s northern Costa Verde, Asturias enjoys an Atlantic climate of mild temperatures and abundant rainfall.   Bordered by the Cantabrian mountains to the south and a rugged northern coast, over 30% of its territory is occupied by natural parks and reserves, including several UNESCO recognized Biosphere Reserves. Long billed as a “Natural & Cultural Paradise”,  Asturias has specialized in sustainable tourism that is eco friendly and focused on the region’s  rich historical and artistic patrimony.  As a result, Asturias is by no means a mass tourism destination but rather attracts a  more selective group of national and international visitors.

Asturias also has a rich historical and artistic heritage evidenced in the artifacts, archeological sites and monuments left by the people who have populated the region since prehistoric times.  UNESCO has distinguished its PreRomanesque Monuments ,  the Paleolithic Cave Art  and the Caminos del Norte to Santiago de Compostela, which originated in Oviedo, as World Heritage Sites.
