The   Cursos de Lengua y Cultura Españolas para Extranjeros (ELE) have a long history at the University of Oviedo.  First developed to provide linguistic support to the hundreds of  European Union ERASMUS  exchange students  that attend the University every year,   the curriculum was soon broadened to suit the needs of the growing body of international students from non-European countries, particularly from the U.S.A.

ELE is part of La Casa de las Lenguas, a university language institute  which houses all non-degree language instruction under one roof.   La Casa de las Lenguas is located at the University’s Humanities Campus along with the Faculties of Philology, Philosophy and  History & Geograph.  All of these faculties share a thematic  library (humanities), an audiovisual center, computer lab and student cafeteria as well as classroom and administrative buildings.
